Why IB?
In this article, Ross explains why she recommends the IB!
Some of you might be already be doing the IB, while some might be unsure whether this would be the right choice. Don’t worry because we’ve got you covered!
If you have been browsing through leaflets and brochures for specific IB schools, you’ve probably heard it all before: “the IB shows a balanced learner” , “it keeps your options open” or sometimes “universities prefer the IB as it shows determination and a hardworking ethic.” You’ve probably also heard that former IB students are less likely to drop out during further education than A-level students. These claims may be true but I’m not here to distinguish the differences between A-levels and the IB programme. Keep your eyes peeled because that’ll be explored in a later issue!
First of all, I’d like to clarify that there are two types of IB courses. There is the IBDP (international baccalaureate diploma programme) and the IBCP (international baccalaureate career programme). As all three of us are studying the IBDP, in our upcoming articles we will talk about our personal reasons for being drawn to the IBDP in particular.
For me, it was mainly the fact that I didn’t want to limit myself to only three or four subjects. But also something I’ve learnt about the IB is that it’s a much nicer community. Of course it is hard work but everyone is willing to help in any way they can. I remember when in our common room donning hoodies and joggers, we were all providing a mixture of last minute revision and distractions for anxious thoughts during our first exam week. Those are the types of memories that you take with you as you move forward with your life.
Now, this tightknit community feeling may only be because our school is quite small but I also think that because of the massive workload, one can’t always accomplish everything. Therefore prioritising becomes key. As everyone prioritises different subjects and tasks, prior knowledge and advice on how to complete them is vital to IB survival.
